This program follows the Lifetime Arts Model for people 60 and older, which features skill-building classes that last eight weeks.
This course is a gentle, hands-on introduction to the 10-hole diatonic harmonica in the key of C. Together we will explore how the instrument is structured, how sound is produced, and how to play it with confidence and ease. Students will learn proper embouchure (how to shape the mouth on the harmonica), develop clean single notes, and begin playing scales, chords, and simple rhythmic patterns.
We will also learn to read basic harmonica tablature (the notation system used by players everywhere) and start making music right away with easy songs, ditties, and familiar melodies. As the course progresses, we will introduce note bending and other expressive techniques at a comfortable pace.
No musical training or previous experience is required; just curiosity, a sense of fun, and a willingness to breathe and play together.
